Description
The bronze statue of Columbus stands on a two-tier base of brownstone rusticated blocks, with a third tier carved of grey granite. The larger-then-life sized figure holds a small globe in his left hand, and he once held a compass in his right hand, which has since disappeared. Originally dedicated in 1892 for the 400th Anniversary of the Discovery of the New World, a new statue had to be recast in 1955 as the original had deteriorated from a rough cleaning in 1930.
