Description
Southside Elementary School (formerly Southside Junior High) was designed by Eliot Noyes with Alan Goldberg as associate architect. Completed in 1969, the two-story concrete building has the external appearance of a fortress with its jutting parapets, vertical fins, hooded doors, and slot windows. The interior, with a two-story common area topped with a skylight, is filled with light. Large abstract murals by Ivan Chermayeff mark four enclosed stairwells.
