An English dissenting minister in colonial New England. His deathbed bequest to the newly founded "schoale or colledge" in the Massachusetts Bay Colony led to the institution being named Harvard College. Born in Southwark, England, Harvard was a graduate of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge. He immigrated to New England in 1637. Harvard University regards him as one of its most honored founders, and a statue honoring him stands prominently in Harvard Yard.
