John Wardle established his architectural practice, John Wardle Architects (now Wardle) in Melbourne in 1986 and has led the growth of the practice from working on small domestic dwellings to university building, museums, and large commercial offices. In 2001, he received his Master of Architecture at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and has been Adjunct Professor at the School of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of South Australia.
In 2020, Wardle was awarded the Australian Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal. The Jury citation reads, in part, “John Wardle is an architect’s architect…a designer of consummate skill, whose works – from the smallest intricate piece of joinery to complex high-rise buildings receive detailed attention and conscientious formal experiment.”
