Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis (1738-1805) was a British army officer and colonial administrator. He is best known for his role as a general during the American Revolutionary War. Cornwallis led British forces in several key battles, including the Battle of Princeton, Battle of Monmouth, and Battle of Camden. Despite his successes, he is most famously remembered for his defeat at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, which effectively ended British hopes of winning the war.
After the American Revolution, Cornwallis had a distinguished post-war career, serving as Governor-General of India and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. His tenure in India saw the consolidation of British control over much of the region, setting the stage for the British Raj.
