The Historic Landmarks Preservation Center (HLPC) is an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the built environment and cultural history of New York City and beyond. Founded by Dr. Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, the HLPC engages in various initiatives, including publishing books, articles, and pamphlets, producing television programs, and organizing lectures, symposia, and exhibitions focused on historic preservation and urban history.
One of its most notable programs is the Cultural Medallions initiative, which commemorates significant individuals and events in New York City's history. These medallions celebrate figures such as James Baldwin, George Gershwin, Babe Ruth, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Jonas Salk, I.M. Pei, and Alfred Butts, the inventor of Scrabble. The HLPC also developed the Historic District Street Name Signs and Historic District Markers and Map program, which provide historical context for the city's 156 designated Historic Districts. The HLPC's work has influenced preservation efforts in other U.S. cities and has been recognized by organizations such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation
