Anthony Wayne was a Pennsylvania‑born military officer whose bold leadership earned him the nickname “Mad Anthony.” A resident of Chester County with deep ties to Philadelphia’s political and military circles, Wayne became one of the Continental Army’s most aggressive and effective commanders during the American Revolution. He distinguished himself in key campaigns, including the defense of Ticonderoga, the Philadelphia campaign, the Battle of Brandywine, and most famously the storming of Stony Point in 1779—a daring nighttime assault that became one of the war’s most celebrated victories. After the Revolution, Wayne continued his service as commander of the Legion of the United States, winning the decisive Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. His career helped shape both the military success of the Revolution and the early national army that followed.
