This monument commemorates those who perished in the U.S.S. Maine in 1898, killing three-quarters of the men on board. The battleship exploded and sank off the coast of Havana, Cuba, during the Spanish-American War of 1898 for reasons still unknown. The inscription reads: To The Valient Seamen Who Perished In The Maine By Fate Unwarned In Death Unafraid.In 1913, the monument was placed at the Columbus Circle and 59th Street entrance to Central Park in New York City.

 A bronze tablet was installed in the plaza beneath the memorial. The tablet, placed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is dedicated to the horses which, in earlier years, pulled the fire department's engines 

Piccirilli is the artist attributed to the sculptures, and Magonigle created the marble monument for the Fireman's Memorial. The monument was dedicated in 1913 to the men who lost their lives in the line of duty. Almost a century later, the monument has new meaning; it also memorializes the 343 firefighters that died while attempting to save others from the World Trade Towers on September 11th, 2001.Fabricator: J. Fireman's Memorial

Located over the entrance of the International Building.

Attilio Piccirilli was one of five brothers trained by their Italian sculptor father, Guiseppe Piccirilli. Immigrating to the United States in 1888, Attilio continued to create work from stone and marble throughout his life in New York City.
