 Due to Kronborg Castle`s UNESCO World Heritage status, the Danish Maritime Museum, formerly housed within the castle`s walls, was evicted in order to restore the castle`s original interiors. It was decided that the museum would be relocated in an adjacent dry dock next to the castle. Contrary to its name, the dry dock was full of water, so it needed to be redesigned to accommodate the new museum. We proposed to place the museum wrapped around the existing dry dock like a doughnut, where the hole was the dry dock itself and the centerpiece of the museum`s collection. A series of three two-level bridges span the dry dock, serving as short-cuts to different sections of the museum. A sloping zigzag bridge spanning the entire dry dock navigates visitors to the main entrance. This bridge creates a dynamic tension between old and new as visitors descend into the museum space overlooking the majestic surroundings above and below ground, while Denmark`s maritime history unfolds in a continuous motion. All floors &ndash;connecting exhibition spaces with the auditorium, classroom, offices, caf&eacute; and the dock floor within the museum&mdash;slope gently, so that a visitor continually descends further below the water`s edge to immerse themselves in Danish maritime lore.

 VIA 57 West is a residential building located at 625 West 57th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, New York City. The pyramid shaped tower block or "tetrahedron", designed by the Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group, rises 467 ft and is 35 stories tall.

Rebuild by Design

“The BIG U is a protective system around Manhattan that shields the city from floods and storm surges while providing social and environmental benefits to the community.” The BIG U is presented as a 10-mile climate‑resilience system designed to protect Lower Manhattan from coastal flooding, sea‑level rise, and extreme weather. The project is divided into three compartments, each able to operate independently during a storm. The design emphasizes community‑driven planning, integrating flood protection with parks, recreation spaces, ecological restoration, and improved waterfront access. The website highlights the project’s origins in the Rebuild by Design competition after Hurricane Sandy and frames it as a model for how cities can combine infrastructure, public space, and climate adaptation.

The BIG U

Fira Barcelona Business Hub is a readaptive use project led by BIG, transforming the historic Palau del Vestit—originally designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition—into a vibrant public destination and contemporary workplace at Plaça d’Espanya.The proposal preserves the existing colonnaded structure while introducing a new Z-shaped volume that creates a dialogue between past and present. The restored colonnade becomes a shaded public plaza, inspired by Barcelona’s courtyard typology, serving both as an entrance and a civic gathering space.Positioned between Plaça d’Espanya, Avinguda Maria Cristina, and the surrounding city fabric, the project improves pedestrian connectivity through a covered passage linking Gran Via to an internal garden. At its centre, a light-filled atrium anchors flexible workspaces, collaborative areas, and a multi-purpose auditorium. The existing towers are repurposed as meeting rooms and an information centre, with access to a rooftop terrace offering panoramic city views.A north-facing orientation maximises daylight while reducing heat gain, complemented by solar panels, green terraces, and shaded outdoor spaces that enhance comfort and connect users with nature.

Fira Barcelona Business Hub

British architect Norman Foster of Foster and Partners was hired to design the new 2 World Trade Center, on the northeastern part of the World Trade Center site at 200 Greenwich Street, in May 2006.&nbsp;

The foundation work was completed in 2013, though no construction has taken place since. The rest of the building, however, has yet to be built unless tenants for Tower 2 could be found.&nbsp;

On June 9, 2015, Wired magazine reported that Two World Trade Center would be redesigned by Bjarke Ingels of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), and be built by 2021. The bottom half of the new design would have been leased out to 21st Century Fox and News Corp until they decided against leaving their current headquarters.&nbsp;

After the pulling out of News Corp and 21st Century Fox, the future of the site became uncertain, with calls for the tower's design to be reverted to its original incarnation. Renderings of a redesigned Foster and Partners design were published in early 2022.

2 World Trade Center

NASA’s CHAPEA mission completed a 378-day Mars simulation with a four-person crew in Houston, aiming to study human resilience in a confined, Mars-like environment. The participants grew their own food, faced simulated challenges like communication delays, and wore pressurized suits for “Marswalks.” This first mission, a part of NASA's effort to address key challenges for a real Mars mission, focused on the physiological, psychological, and logistical requirements for long-term space habitation. Further simulations are scheduled for 2025 and 2026 to continue this research.

The ceiling was printed separately and moved into place.

Designed in collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group and 3D-printing company ICON, who build the habitat with layers of concrete mixture dubbed "lavacrete." Robotic 3D-printing is one way humans might be able to create a viable base on Mars. The four participants spent 378 days inside the 1,700-square-foot base.

Crew conducted simulated science work and will be heavily tested themselves.

The four participants shut in the base will simulate space-relevant activities, including maintenance and repairs, and will be rigorously tested for the impact of confinement and diet on both their physical and mental health.

located at Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX simulates a realistic Mars habitat to support long-duration, exploration-class space missions. Life in Mars Dune Alpha will resemble the expected experience for those living in a future Mars surface habitat. The layout of the 3D printed habitat was designed to provide separate areas within the habitat for living and working.

1,700 square feet and includes work stations, living and kitchen area, medical center, as well as bathroom and private bedrooms. "The separation of the living area with the work area was very intentional," says Scott M. Smith, co-investigator for CHAPEA.

(Scientific International Research In a Unique terrestrial Station) have taken place in the Nazemnyy Eksperimental'nyy Kompleks, or NEK, facility in Moscow, Russia. The facility was built in the 1960s and has been used in many analogs, including Mars-500. In the past, SIRIUS missions have involved participants from the US and Russia.

utilizes a 650-square foot habitat inside the Johnson Space Center. The unit is designed to reflect a spacecraft and used for confinement and isolation simulations. There have been six missions so far, with the latest starting in January 2023 and running for 45 days, simulating at trip to Phobos, one of Mars' moons. Crews are tested for health, behavior and performance.

A partnership between NASA and JAXA -- the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency -- that is testing living, working and sleeping inside a rover in a simulation for moon surface missions as part of the Artemis program.

Not all analogs involve finding a place that looks like Mars. Bed rest studies like :envihab, the ESA and the German Space Agency (DLR) in 2019, have used bed rest to simulate some of the effects of microgravity, and tested whether stints in a centrifuge like the one pictured can alleviate some of its impact.
