Dolley Madison was the wife of James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. Born Dolley Payne in Guilford County, North Carolina, she was known for her social skills and political acumen. As First Lady from 1809 to 1817, she helped shape the role of the president's spouse. She is remembered for her social gatherings that brought together members of different political parties. During the War of 1812, she saved a portrait of George Washington from the White House before it was burned by British troops.
