Jill Slosberg-Ackerman is an artist based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, known for her work in sculpture, drawing, and installations. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, she was inspired by the idealism and pragmatism of the pioneers who settled the Great Plains. She trained as a jeweler and sculptor, earning her BFA and MFA from the Boston Museum School and Tufts University.
Slosberg-Ackerman’s work often explores the contrast between nature and artifice, the relationship between handmade objects and manufactured products, and the tension between sculpture and design. She works primarily with wood, utilizing its varied manifestations to reference both nature and culture. Her process is intuitive and based on history, material culture, and relationships.
In addition to her artistic practice, she has been a dedicated educator, recently retiring after 47 years of teaching at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has also been involved in activism, including founding Boston’s Women’s Action Coalition (WAC) and creating anti-war posters.
