John Cadwalader was a Philadelphia merchant, militia general, and influential patriot leader during the American Revolution. Born into a prominent Pennsylvania family, he commanded the city’s Associator regiments and played a key role in supporting George Washington during the 1776–77 New Jersey campaign. Although his planned crossing of the Delaware on the night of Washington’s Trenton attack was blocked by ice, Cadwalader later joined Washington’s forces and helped secure victories at Princeton and in subsequent operations.
