<p>Tried and convicted as a spy, he was executed by order of George Washington. His death sparked outrage in Britain, and even some Patriot leaders like Alexander Hamilton and Lafayette opposed the execution. André is often remembered sympathetically by historians.</p>

<p>Major John André was head of British intelligence during the American Revolution. In 1780, he conspired with Benedict Arnold to surrender West Point to the British. After their meeting, André was forced to travel through American territory in civilian clothes and was captured.&nbsp;</p>
