Marisol had a traumatic childhood. When she was 11, her mother committed suicide and her father then shipped her off to boarding school. She apparently didn't speak again until she was in her twenties. Her art education began in Los Angeles where the family moved during the war, followed by the Ecole Des Beaux Arts, the Art Students League and the New School. Artistically she came of age in the 60's when she connected with Andy Warhol, appearing in several of his films and began to become noted for fusing Pop Art and Folk Art in her tableaux sculptures which were often created from photographs of famous people. She too became quite famous for her sculptures, her looks and her ‘Garboesque’ personality.
