9/11 Memorial

The museum houses some of the memorial artifacts of the 9/11 attacks, including a salvaged staircase that was used to escape the fallen towers and the steel beam cross that inspired firefighters. The museum was dedicated on May 15, 2014, with remarks from Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg and President Barack Obama. On the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the National September 11 Memorial opened in New York. Designed by the architect Michael Arad, the memorial features two 30-foot waterfalls that line the footprint of the Twin Towers and plunge into the earth, invoking a sense of void and absence where the looming towers once stood. The memorial opened to victims' families on September 11, 2011, and to the public the following day.

The 9/11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance, honoring the 2,977 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing on February 26, 1993.The 9/11 Memorial is located at the site of the former World Trade Center complex and occupies approximately half of the 16-acre site. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest man-made waterfalls in North America.

The World Trade Center Memorial design competition drew 5,201 entries from 63 nations. In 2004, architect Michael Arad, with landscape architect Peter Walker, won with Reflecting Absence. Arad became a partner at Handel Architects shortly after.

Ground Zero

Weeks after 9/11, a single Callery pear tree, which became known as the Survivor Tree, was discovered buried in rubble at Ground Zero. It was burned and badly damaged, but it still showed signs of life.

Workers rescued the tree and it was transported to a park where it was tended to and cared for. Over the years, it grew from eight to 30 feet tall, sprouting new branches and flowering in spring. It was returned to the 9/11 Memorial plaza in 2010.

The Memorial site is a public space for meditation and contemplation, centered around two reflecting pools that sit in the footprints of the original World Trade Center Towers. Lining the perimeter of each fountain is a parapet of victims’ names, arranged and inscribed according to a system of “meaningful adjacencies.” The pools are clad in Jet Mist granite, and the names panels are made of bronze that has been treated with a ferric based patina. At night, the names are illuminated from within. The fountains rest within a new plaza that acts as a sacred ground for those coming to honor the victims, while also integrating the Memorial into the surrounding city.&nbsp;

Reflecting Absence - World Trade Center Site Memorial

Michael Arad talks about "Reflecting Absence", the memorial at the 9/11 Memorial. 

The 9/11 Memorial Museum showcases the architecture, archaeology, and history of the 9/11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing at the site where the Twin Towers once stood. It tells stories of the attacks, the aftermath, and the people who experienced these events.
