The terminal, which is the biggest in Spain, was commissioned to enable Barajas International Airport to compete with major hub airports within Europe. The core building comprises a sequence of parallel spaces separated by a linear block allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the interior. The same form is applied to the satellite, which is comprised of two linear blocks, one for passport control and the other containing the gates. The bamboo linear roof structure is connected above by a chain of roof lights, permitting maximum flexibility in the arrangement of accommodation on each of the floors. This enables the building to be expanded in phases. The new terminal has a metro, rail station and landside transit link to the existing terminals as well as a transit system linking the core terminal with the satellite. 

Terminal 4 at Barajas Airport

The Lloyd's Building is the home of the insurance institution Lloyd's of London. It is located on the former site of East India House in Lime Street, in London's main financial district, the City of London. The building is a leading example of radical Bowellism architecture in which the services for the building, such as ducts and lifts, are located on the exterior to maximise space in the interior. In 2011, twenty-five years after its completion in 1986 the building received Grade I listing; at this time it was the youngest structure ever to obtain this status. It is said by Historic England to be "universally recognised as one of the key buildings of the modern epoch". 

Lloyd's of London

Maggie`s West London Centre, at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith, is conceived as a contrast to the main hospital building. It is a non-institutional building, an &lsquo;open house` of 370 square metres, arranged over one and a half floors. It is both flexible and adaptable. It can be transparent or opaque, noisy or quiet, light or dark and has a kitchen at the heart of the structure. Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners hopes to create something that is more homely &ndash; more welcoming, more comfortable, more thought-provoking and more uplifting.  The entrance is approached from within the hospital grounds via the car park. The building consists of four components: a wall that wraps around four sides, providing protection from its exposed location; the kitchen &ndash; a single height central space which is the main focus and heart of the building; annexes off the main space, conceived as meeting, sitting and consulting rooms; and a &lsquo;floating roof` that over sails the outer wall and helps flood the space with light. Small courtyards are formed between the building and the wall for quiet spaces. 

Maggie's West London Centre

Commissioned to mark the beginning of the twenty-first century, the Millennium Dome was intended as a celebratory, emblematic and non-hierarchical structure that offered a vast, flexible space. The 1.08 million-square-foot adaptable space was suitable for the exhibition and performance events as well as any number of future uses.

 The present building is located at the heart of the revitalised World Trade Center site in New York. The brief called for the design of a new commercial skyscraper to deliver a total of 2.5million sq ft (above ground area) designed within the guidelines of the previously developed Studio Libeskind masterplan for the site. The brief for 3 World Trade Center outlined the building&rsquo;s function as the site&rsquo;s commercial core and aimed to address the issue of balancing retail and office space, while also complementing and acknowledging the WTC Memorial. Tower 3 has an orthogonal relationship to the main space between the Memorial water pools and to further complement this relationship, the central zone of the building reduces in mass as it rises towards the sky. The effect is a stepped profile which accentuates the building&rsquo;s verticality, relative to the memorial site and is sympathetic to the height and position of the neighbouring buildings. The design includes five trading floors, 53 office floors (totalling 2.5 million sq ft (232,255 m&sup2;)) of above ground area, five retail levels, and eight mechanical floors which serve trading and office floors, 44 passenger lifts and two principal stairwells. The lower section of Tower 3 &ndash; the &lsquo;podium building&rsquo; &ndash; contains the tower&rsquo;s retail element and the trading floors, and the upper levels hold the office space. The streetscape is activated by retail fa&ccedil;ades enabling free-flowing movement of shoppers between five levels of retail, three above ground and two below, served by two lifts and four stairwells. To maximise sustainability in terms of the building&rsquo;s day-to-day functioning, similar &lsquo;green design&rsquo; features as those included in the design of 7 World Trade Center have been incorporated. The design team ensured energy use and costs were significantly reduced compared to typical Manhattan office buildings, and has achieved &lsquo;Gold&rsquo; Certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design from the U.S. Green Buildings Council. 

 Construction was delayed until 2014 because of a lack of an anchor tenant. The building's concrete core was topped out to maximum height in August 2016, with the perimeter steel structure following on October 6, 2016. 

 When American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower at 1 WTC, its landing gear fell on the hotel's roof. Firefighters used the lobby as a staging area, and were also in the hotel to evacuate guests that may have still been inside. The collapse of the South Tower at 2 WTC split the building in half. Fourteen people who had been trying to evacuate the partially destroyed hotel after the first collapse managed to survive the second collapse in this small section. 

 The original building at the site was the Marriott World Trade Center, designed by SOM, which was a 22-story, 825-room hotel at 3 World Trade Center. It opened in April 1981 as the Vista International Hotel and was the first major hotel to open in Lower Manhattan south of Canal Street since 1836. 

3 World Trade Center

Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano`s proposal for the Centre Pompidou &ndash; a comprehensive cultural amenity and one of France`s grand projets of the 1980s &ndash; was a truly flexible container in which all interior spaces could be rearranged at will and exterior elements could be clipped on and off over the life span of the building. The notion of flexibility is extended to every component of the building; the Centre was to act as &lsquo;an ever-changing framework, a meccano kit, a climbing frame for the old and the young`. Conceived as a well-serviced shed, the building contains a series of uniform spaces supported externally by a free-standing structural frame, the whole capable of change in plan, section and elevation, able to absorb the unforeseen requirements of the future.The lower level of the building contains large public areas such as the theatre, shops, reception and street-level caf&eacute;. Above, vast open floors house galleries, outdoor terraces and administrative areas. Finally, the top floor accommodates a restaurant, experimental cinema and temporary exhibitions, all of which could be open late into the night, bringing life and activity to the square during the evening. Half the site was left unbuilt to make way for a square of civic proportions which could be used for a wide variety of community uses including markets, exhibitions, performances, circuses, games, buskers and so on. Rue St. Martin, with its lively mix of residences above businesses, was closed to traffic to allow the cafes, restaurants and shops to spill out into the square. Facing the square, the west fa&ccedil;ade is given over to vertical and horizontal movement, taking advantage of spectacular views over Paris. Circulation devices &ndash; escalators, lifts, escapes.

Centre Pompidou

A British architectural firm, founded in 1977 and originally known as the Richard Rogers Partnership. The previous head office at Thames Wharf Studios, Hammersmith The practice is strongly focused on sustainability, urban regeneration and social awareness, themes that have long been a feature of Rogers' work. Celebration of public space and the encouragement of public activities is also a recurring theme.Richard Rogers explained the reason for the change of the practice name from the Richard Rogers Partnership to Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners in 2007 was because "We wanted to avoid the situation where the name of the practice is someone who died 100 years ago. Architecture is a living thing. If I want to leave something to the future, it has to be able to change &ndash; but retain something of the ethos that we built up over 50 years."

 The practice&rsquo;s  choice of a completely open plan office reflects the democratic
 beliefs. There are no individual offices; partners sit 
with their architectural teams, and every Monday a weekly meeting open 
to all employees is held to discuss competitions, on-going projects and 
more. Staff wellbeing is important, with a conscious focus on providing 
good working conditions for staff and ensuring a family-friendly 
environment.  This collegiate approach extends to the wider world with a  constitution that consciously brings a moral dimension to the work. This
 includes a staff profit-sharing scheme and significant contributions to
