Thomas Lynch Jr., a native of South Carolina, received his education in England, where he graduated with honors from Cambridge. After studying law in London, he returned home in 1772 and became politically active. In 1775, he was commissioned as a company commander in the South Carolina regiment and was subsequently elected to a seat in the Continental Congress. Having fallen ill and subsequently retired from Congress, Lynch Jr., and his wife embarked on a journey to the West Indies, but their ship disappeared and there is no record of their fate.
