Thomas Stone, a landowner and lawyer from Maryland, was born in 1743. He was elected to Congress in 1775, voted for Independence in 1776, and was a member of the committee that framed the Articles of Confederation. During his second term in Congress in 1783, he served as chairman but retired at the end of his term. Stone declined an invitation to attend the Constitutional Convention in 1787 due to his wife's poor health, who unfortunately passed away the same year. Grieving the loss, Stone decided to travel to England, but passed away in Alexandria while waiting for the ship. He was 44 years old, and no letters or papers that account for his life have ever been found.
