Commodore Uriah P. Levy was a trailblazing U.S. Navy officer, becoming the first Jewish flag officer (Commodore) and a fierce advocate for abolishing corporal punishment (flogging). A veteran of the War of 1812 and commander of the Mediterranean fleet, he overcame severe antisemitism, including six court-martials, to serve for 50 years. He also preserved Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello.
