A gut renovation to a townhouse in Fort Greene. In addition to reconfiguring and refinishing the entire space, the design also adds a glass ‘side-car’ to the building that cantilevers into the two-and-a-half foot gap between the townhouse and its adjacent property. The side-car creates a two-story shaft of light to fill even the deepest areas of the plan with sun and also makes space for a reading niche on the main level. We worked closely with the New York City Department of Buildings and the Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure the design maintained proper access at ground level and respected the historic context.
