With the aid of a metal detector, Louis Miller discovered a 20 lb fragment of the statue of King George III. He then tried to sell it to the Museum of the City of New York for $5000. It is still there. The property owner, Fred Favorite sued to have the piece returned to him since Miller had trespassed especially when it came out in court that he had spoken with the Librarian of the Wilton Historical Society. There were some interesting questions raised about the motivations of the people who buried the fragment since a war was being fought and everyone involved was long dead. The case made it all the way to the Connecticut Supreme Court which decided that Miller had no claim to the property.
