Commissioned, 1771

In 1771, the Society of the New York Hospital was chartered by King George III for the "reception of such patients as require medical treatment, chirurgical management, and maniacs" becoming the second oldest hospital in the City after Bellevue. A five acre site is acquired on the west side of Broadway opposite Pearl Street in July 24, 1771 at the first meeting.

Opened, 1776

They build the first facility on Pearl Street, where the corner stone is laid September 3, 1773. New York Hospital opens ifs first facility, in Pearl Street (an earlier building was gutted by fire February 28, 1775 before it was quite finished). The colonial assembly was granted £4,000 for use in erecting a new building.

Factoids

July 12, 1776-The first patients treated are two Continental Army soldiers wounded in an engagement between shore batteries and two British men-of-war trying to force their way up the Hudson.
