The World of Volvo, a 22,000 sqm. experience center in Gothenburg, Sweden, is designed by Henning Larsen. The design employs computational parametric design and timber as the primary structural element. The building’s form, inspired by Scandinavian landscape and traditions, consists of three structures resembling tree trunks, housing exhibition spaces and building services. These structures are surrounded by columns that extend and branch towards the ceiling, creating a forest-like canopy. The structural columns and beams are constructed from glue-laminated timber, and the floor slabs are made from locally sourced cross-laminated timber.
The design reflects the Swedish concept of ‘Allemansrätten’, emphasizing openness and integration with the landscape. The center serves as a meeting place for Volvo, uniting the Volvo Group and Volvo Cars brand, and houses exhibition spaces, a restaurant, and conference and meeting spaces. The World of Volvo exemplifies sustainable architecture through its innovative use of timber and landscape integration.
