CBGB was a legendary New York City music club opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal in the East Village. Originally intended for Country, Bluegrass, and Blues, it became the birthplace of punk and new wave, launching bands like the Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith Group, Talking Heads, and Television. The club also nurtured hardcore and alternative acts such as Agnostic Front and Sick of It All.
Beside the main club, Kristal opened CBGB Record Canteen, later converted into CB's 313 Gallery for acoustic, folk, jazz, and experimental performances, as well as Goth nights.
