In 1987, a design for the unbuilt Carnegie-Mellon Student Center was proposed by Machado Silvetti Associates. The design aimed to encapsulate a wide array of functions in an innovative and engaging manner. The center was planned to be situated on the northeast side of the main campus entrance, serving as the campus’s hub and a blueprint for future structures. The design considered the challenges of situating an institution within an urban environment. The extensive requirements were categorized into community and athletic amenities. The design approach combined typological and iconographical methods with a spatial strategy to address these complexities. The goal was to create a 24/7 operational building that promoted social interaction and participation in various activities.
