The Second African Burial Ground, located on Chrystie Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side, served as a resting place for enslaved and free Black New Yorkers between 1795 and 1843. Established by the African Society, it later became part of St. Philip’s Church before being closed and partially reinterred at Cypress Hills Cemetery. Many remains were left behind, and some were uncovered during construction in 2006. Today, only a small plaque at M’Finda Kalunga Garden marks the site, with efforts ongoing for greater recognition.
