The Yule Log broadcast, initially aired by WPIX (Channel 11) in New York City, featured a six-minute loop of a yule log burning in a fireplace. This broadcast was a pioneering holiday tradition, filmed in full color at Gracie Mansion, the mayor's residence in New York City. Unfortunately, when WPIX shot the original Gracie Mansion footage, to capture the log in all its flaming glory, the crew decided to remove the protective screen, and a stray spark damaged a valuable antique rug at the mayor’s residence. When the original 16 millimeter footage had become worn down, they were denied access by Mayor John Lindsay to reshoot the Yule log at Gracie Mansion.
In 1970, new footage was shot in a different location, expanding the loop to seven minutes and upgrading to 35 millimeter film. Despite the evolution of technology, WPIX continues to broadcast the Yule Log for four to five hours every Christmas morning. This tradition has been emulated by numerous television stations across the United States over the years.
