During the Civil War, newly invented canned milk was in high demand by the Union Army. Because of this increased need for milk during the war, the Wassaic area turned to dairy farming in the mid-nineteenth century. However, Wassaic's dairy production quickly fell behind that of other areas; the dairy farms soon became obsolete and were eventually converted to serve other purposes.
