Located under the George Washington Bridge, Jeffrey’s Hook was a hazardous section of the Hudson River, historically frequented by Native Americans, including the Weckquaesgeek of the Lenape tribe. As trade and travel increased, shipwrecks at the site also rose. To prevent accidents, a red pole was installed, later equipped with lanterns in 1889 to help guide ships. This was a key measure to aid navigation along this treacherous stretch of the river, which had become a crucial route for both the Dutch and English settlers.
