Fireman’s Memorial Monument

The Fireman`s Memorial Monument in Trinity Church`s graveyard was erected at the request of the volunteer firemen of the Empire Steam Engine Company No. 42 as a tribute to six firemen who were killed as firefighters or in battle as soldiers in the Civil War. The date on the monument is 1865 — the year that New York City`s volunteer firefighters were first organized into professional firefighting companies.
