The Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University was recently renovated and expanded by Johnston Marklee. The project involved transforming two former industrial buildings—a warehouse and a dance studio—into a cohesive, modern museum that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding neighborhood. The renovation preserved the building's existing form while updating its facade and expanding its interior spaces. A new open-air courtyard connects the two buildings, providing natural light and serving as a central gathering space. The museum's design draws inspiration from early 20th-century Southern Californian landscapes and urban scenes, combining clean architectural styles with a touch of industrial aesthetic. Sustainable architecture measures were also incorporated to minimize energy costs and construction impact.
