Parkman Plaza is a notable area within Boston Common, featuring three bronze statues that represent Learning, Industry, and Religion. Each statue is set on a granite base, with Learning depicting a seated figure using a compass while reading a book, Industry showing a man using a jackhammer, and Religion portraying a man kneeling with his arms extended. The statues were created by artists Arcangelo Cascieri and Adio DiBiccari and were added to the original plaza design in 1959.
The paving design is mostly concrete with brick accents around the fountain basin and flagpole bases. The plaza grades are generally flat, although there are several low spots that collect water. Dedicated to the memory of George F. Parkman, a significant benefactor of Boston’s parks, Parkman Plaza serves as a convergence point for three interior park pathways and Lafayette Mall.
