Gun control Sullivan Law takes effect

The Sullivan Act was introduced by state senator Timothy Sullivan in 1911 partly in response to rising street crime in New York City, particularly in the Lower East Side, which had a large Italian immigrant population. The law was partly influenced by public pressure following violent incidents, including a murder-suicide near Gramercy Park. It required licenses for carrying concealable firearms and has been criticized for its selective enforcement and corruption issues.

The Sullivan Act is a 1911 New York state gun control law requiring licenses for the possession of concealable firearms. Carrying a firearm in public without a license became a felony under this law, which has been criticized for selective enforcement and corruption in licensing. 

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the law in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen in 2022, deeming its "proper cause" requirement unconstitutional under the Second and Fourteenth Amendments.
