One Kendall Square Plaza in Cambridge encompasses two primary spaces: Hampshire and Upper plazas.
The Hampshire Plaza serves as the main entrance to the two-block campus and functions as a central hub within Kendall Square. The design aimed to restructure the plaza to create expansive, adaptable, and interconnected spaces. Additional stairs, ramps, and bridges were incorporated to streamline circulation and ensure accessibility across all levels. An existing upper deck was extended to provide additional seating. The Upper Plaza was updated with new unit pavers. Catenary lighting was installed with poles that align with the existing Honey Locust trees.
The South Plaza Park, located centrally in Kendall Square, features large raised planting beds, one of which includes an amphitheater. A pergola provides shade for lounge chairs overlooking the canal. Tables, chairs, and umbrellas are scattered throughout the site for use by an adjacent restaurant and visitors. A sculpture of a neuron, a nod to the scientific research conducted in the square, is also present.
