First Sidewalk was installed in New York

By 1666 stone pebbles were laid in the center of Broadway.  By 1790 the city had expanded and the street was paved as far north as Vesey Street and the first sidewalk was installed.  Neighboring property owners were assessed the charges by order of the Common Council.
