The corner of John and South Streets, currently an empty lot, was once part of the Schermerhorn Row Block with Federal-style buildings. In 1999, archaeological testing revealed significant cultural materials and research potential. The remains of the Bowne/Byvanck pier, extending from 199 Water Street to South Street, were found, indicating the site's importance in the final phase of the Seaport's landmaking process. Despite the potential for uncovering artifacts, retaining structures, and 19th-century features, the site remains unexcavated as the planned building was never constructed. This area holds untapped archaeological insights into New York's historic adaptation of the landscape.
