For the City of New York`s Department of Design and Construction (DDC), Gruzen Samton • IBI Group designed this award-winning, 29,000- sf Sunrise Yard Facilities Maintenance, located in Ozone Park, Queens. The new facility, developed with high-performance design in mind, houses maintenance and repair personnel from the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT). It accommodates a variety of spaces and functions, including materials storage, shops (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and painting), a drive-through vehicle maintenance bay, locker rooms and administrative offices. The project team worked closely with the Queens office of the Department of City Planning (DCP) to limit the new facility's impact on the surrounding Residential neighborhood. Maintaining a low impact on the neighborhood was paramount to Gruzen Samton and was achieved using low tech solutions that still produced a high performance design, which saves considerable energy. The project has achieved LEED Platinum certification.
