Formed in 1902 by JP Morgan as an attempt to monopolize transatlantic shipping, the International Mercantile Marine Company was the world's largest steamship company. Its headquarters building was erected on the site of the former red brick Washington Building. This structure, designed by Edward Kendall (1882-87), was one of the earliest tall buildings. Chambers renovated the existing structure and its interior spaces and added new limestone facades. Citibank is the current tenant of the 1980's renovation and occupies the grand former ticketing office.
