The Brooklyn Academy of Music Historic District was designated in 1978. It is named for its most prominent building, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, established in 1859. After the original structure on Montague Street burned in 1903, the present structure was built in 1908 in the Italian-Renaissance style by theater architecture firm Herts & Tallant. The majority of the district’s brick and brownstone row houses were constructed in the 1850s.
