Our design for the new 5-acre school campus near downtown Jersey City included two separate facilities housing a primary school for 620 students and a middle school for 850 students. The site, adjacent to the Van Vorst Park Historic District, was assembled through the acquisition of industrial lots and the closing of two streets to form one large property bounded by three major streets and an avenue. Consequently, we designed the campus to be a unifying community center that forms a bridge to the historic district, with a continuity of the scale and materials found in adjacent neighborhood buildings. Design highlights included: modern interpretations of traditional architectural elements; high-performance, environmentally sustainable design; state-of-the-art operations & climate control systems; approximately 300,000 sf of new teaching facilities; and a 16,000-sf natatorium.
