The City Bank of New York experienced one of the earliest bank heists in U.S. history, when burglars used copied keys to steal $245,000 (equivalent to over $52 million in today’s currency). The suspects, James Honeyman and William J. Murray, quickly spent part of the haul before being apprehended. High Constable Hays located most of the money hidden in trunks in Honeyman’s apartment. Both men were convicted and served five years in Sing Sing prison, although $63,000 was never recovered.
