KPF’s design for the new Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) develops a state-of-the-art facility for the University that will attract researchers from across the country. The ASRC is designed to accommodate research initiatives ranging from photonics to structural biology and from weather research to cancer research, through a strategy of providing a modular utility “infrastructure” that can be modified at the laboratory space to support specific research requirements. The design allows core laboratory facilities to be shared by multiple disciplines and the design’s two buildings are linked by a large below-grade animal vivarium. The ASRC will provide new research laboratories for the more environmentally demanding research activities that cannot be accommodated by renovating the existing Science Facility. With forms inspired by gorge formations in the surrounding landscape, the campus provides an oasis in the city.
