Located above the celebrated Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan, the Met Life Building is a long-standing icon of modern architecture. To refresh the aging structure and position it for commercial success in the 21st century, KPF was commissioned to renovate and restore the retail concourse and main lobby levels.
The project scope included improvements to street-level traffic patterns, updating elevator lobbies, new elevator cab interiors, new ceilings and lighting, and new bronze retail storefronts. Also included were provisions for ADA compliance, asbestos abatement, upgraded mechanical systems, restoration of the terrazzo floors and cleaning the travertine walls.
