Tyger was the ship used by Dutch explorer Adriaen Block during his 1613 voyage along the East Coast of North America and the Hudson River.
Burned, Nov, 1613
After trading with the Lenape in Manhattan and filling the vessel with animal pelts, an accidental fire destroyed Tyger in November 1613, leaving the charred hull beached and later buried by natural silt and landfill.
Excavated, 1916

During subway construction near Greenwich and Dey Streets, workers unearthed part of the ship’s prow and keel roughly 20 feet underground—directly where the shoreline had once been. The recovered timbers were preserved and eventually displayed at the Museum of the City of New York. While it's unclear if more of the wreck remains buried beneath the World Trade Center site, Tyger represents a rare archaeological link to early Dutch exploration in Manhattan.
