<p>On January 25, 1776, Congress approved the creation of a monument in honor of Montgomery, with a state memorial service held on February 19, 1776.</p>

<p>Across the thirteen colonies, Montgomery was revered as a hero, and his death was leveraged by Patriots to bolster support for the war effort.</p>

"25th January 1776 to tranfmit to Pofterity a grateful remembrance of the patriotism conduct enterprize &amp;amp; perfeverance of Major General Richard Montgomery. Who after a feries of succefses amidft the most difcouragning difficulties fell in the attack on Quebec 31st December 1775, aged 37 years."
