The museum houses 1.6 million objects including a large collection of historical artifacts and works by the Hudson River School painters and John Audobon's 435 watercolors of birds. The library contains over 3 million books and other printed materials.

The five-year renovation project to make the museum more user friendly and was completed in 2011.

Addition and Renovation, 2026

The institution has expanded its building on Central Park West, adding more than 70,000 square feet of program space for itself and for The American LGBTQ+ Museum, New York’s first museum dedicated to LGBTQ+ history and culture, which will make its permanent home at New-York Historical. The design provides additional classrooms, galleries, collections study areas, and a state-of-the-art compact storage facility for the institution’s Patricia D. Klingenstein Library.

Factoids

2014 -The archives of the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York are transferred to the care of the New York Historical Society, joining a collection of documents and histories of the Saint Andrew's Society already in the possession of the Historical Society.
