John's Restaurant, established in 1908, became infamous on August 11, 1922, when Umberto Valenti, suspected of organizing assassination attempts on Joe "The Boss" Masseria, was killed there. Masseria had invited Valenti to a "peace meeting" at the restaurant, but upon arrival, Valenti and his men were ambushed by Masseria's gunmen, including "Lucky" Luciano. The shootout left Valenti and his two associates dead, with bystanders injured. Ironically, Luciano would later betray and orchestrate the murder of Masseria in 1931.
