The Edward Mooney House, at 18 Bowery and Pell Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown, was built between 1785 and 1789 for butcher Edward Mooney on land confiscated from Loyalist James De Lancey. Combining Georgian and Federal styles, it is the city’s earliest surviving Federal-style townhouse. Mooney lived there until his death around 1800, after which the house was expanded in 1807 and later repurposed over the decades as a hotel, brothel, and saloon.
This is considered to be Manhattan's oldest row house.
After Mooney's death in 1800, the building has housed a variety of businesses, including Barney Flynn’s, an Irish Tavern (late 19th century). It was frequented by Chuck Connors, the Mayor of Chinatown.
