The Central Burying Ground, established in 1756, is one of Boston’s historic cemeteries located on the Boylston Street side of Boston Common. It was created to address overcrowding in other burial sites in the city2. Notable individuals buried there include artist Gilbert Stuart, known for his portraits of George Washington, and composer William Billings. The cemetery also contains the graves of Samuel Sprague, a participant in the Boston Tea Party, and his son Charles Sprague, one of America’s earliest poets.
