On May 20, 1985, John Gotti, leader of the Gambino crime family, visited a cigar shop for one last smoke before turning himself in to the authorities. Known as “The Teflon Don” due to his ability to avoid conviction, Gotti's luck ran out in 1992 when he was convicted on multiple charges, including murder and racketeering. He was sentenced to life in prison but died in 2002 of throat cancer. The club also saw the 1978 murder of Salvatore Briguglio, a New Jersey Teamsters official.
